This jade box and cover are creatively carved to follow the shape of a qin,an ancient Chinese musical instrument. The top cover is carved with an inscription in low relief and further signed as Zigang. The base of the box is also inscribed with four Chinese characters. The thin semi-translucent stone is of even pale celadon tone.
Lu Zigang is a famous carver appeared in literature as early as the Wanli period,in which mentioned his masterfully made jades were highly sought. Lu was especially known for his delicately work pendant. The fine quality of the material and the skilled carving seen on this qin-shaped box suggest that it is by Lu’s hand and of the period.
