This cup is carved in an irregular form simulating a rhinoceros horn libation cup. It is intricately carved in high relief on the exterior, skillfully depicting the landscape with a small house amidst the rocks and leafy branches of pine and bamboo. The interior is finely polished and left plain. The wood is patinated to an attractive dark reddish-brown tone which also imitate the color of rhinoceros horn. A recent similar example decorated with phoenix and dragon pattern can be found in Sotheby’s Hong Kong,3 April 2018,Lot 3657.
