The stone is carved in columnar form with a flat top and bottom. It bears is an attractive mottled beige cream-white colour with some reddish brown areas and also with a fine internal network of‘radish’white veins. The smoothly polished sides are inscribed with poems by Han Tian Heng who was born in 1940 in Shanghai and was famous for his calligraphy,seal carving and painting. A similar seal carving with poems by Han Tian Heng was previously sold in Poly Beijing,4 April 2013,Lot 7632 for CNY 4,025,000.
Soapstones come in varieties of red,black,white and,the most celebrated variety,yellow (tianhuang). White soapstone are prized for their‘mutton fat’texture and colour,as well as the fine network of veins resembling a cut radish pattern,which features quite prominently on the present lot. A combination of tianhuang and white soapstone is called “jingyingtian“ which means “gold and silver stone“,like the present lot.
