These fine pair of famille-rose and grisaille-decorated cupstands are supported on a tapered foot, centred with a shou character bounded by a moulded raised gilt lip for receiving the cup, below the character shou, an iron-red painted sun rising from the waving sea, four grisaille painted characters ‘Fu Ru Dong Hai’ are evenly arranged on the top center of the character ‘ shou ‘, the everted rims gilt, the bases of the cupstands each inscribed in grisaille with a four-character ‘Baoqiangzhaizhi (consigned by Baoqiangzhai) ‘ seal mark. Porcelains with ‘Baoqiangzhaizhi’ mark were made during the Qianlong period, for the special use during the imperial birthday event. See small examples with same mark in J.M. Hu Collection in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Another example sold in Sotheby’s Hong Kong, Nov 1998, Lot 399.
