The pomegranate month cup is potted with a delicately potted U-shaped body rising from a short foot to a flared rim, the exterior brightly painted with a gnarled pomegranate tree, representing the fifth month, the reverse with a poetic inscription relating to the depicted flowers, followed by a seal reading shang (‘to appreciate’), the base with an underglaze-blue six-character Kangxi reign mark within a double circle. Pomegranate month cup is relatively rarely seen comparing with other floral month cups, only one example sold at Christie’s Hong Kong in 1 May, 1995, lot 734. Another blue and white example was sold at the 2 May 2000, Lot 662.

Each delicately potted and surmounted on a short foot, the steep sides rising towards a gently everted rim, the exterior intricately
painted with design of flowers of twelve months respectively,
jasminum in January, apricot flowers in February, peach blossom
in March, peony in April, pomegranate blossom in May, lotus in
June, orchid in July, sweet osmanthus in August, chrysanthemum in
September, monthly rose in October, plum blossom in November
and narcissus in December. The reverse inscribed with a tencharacter poem in ‘kaishu’, and a seal mark, the base inscribed in
underglaze-blue with a six-character mark within double circles.
