"I ensure that my work is an embodiment of my creative expression. My pursuit for perfection is what makes a difference, and it guides me and my business through every endeavour."
-Michelle Ong
Michelle Ong was born and raised in Hong Kong. Her parents loved to entertain, and Ong remembers being enthralled by the elegantly dressed guests at their frequent parties, the women shimmering in their jewels. After graduation at the University of Toronto,Canada,Michelle decided to follow her heart and underpin her hobby in jewelry with serious knowledge, expertise and professionalism. During her apprenticeship with a prominent Hong Kong gem dealer and diamond importer, she met Avi Nagar. They launched Carnet together in 1998.
It is not difficult to notice the oriental influence in the designs that Michelle has drawn on her origins in Hong Kong, including the Five Elements, the auspicious dragon and belief in the power of jade. These layering with her experience in America and her love of European culture, fashion, art, music, food and wine, all came together instinctively and harmoniously in Carnet jewels: as light as air, dreamy, mercurial and poetic, with a tantalizing touch of decadence.
The brooch and pair of earrings by Carnet presented by Poly Auction are with antique rose-cut diamonds; the shy, soft, seductive glimmer makes rose-cut one of Michelle’s personal favorites. Trying on the pieces is like being transported to an age of intense glamour or a fairy -tale,and finally to a perfect vision of dynamic, confident, contemporary femininity. To be who we want to be as women,to express all kinds of femininity, not to be dictated to by fashion - this is the essence of Carnet’s style and identity.
