Champlevé enamel was originally invented in the 11th century by the craftsmen in Limoges, France. On the metal surface, patterns are made by compressing or engraving, and the hollows are filled with transparent enamel and placed in a high-temperature kiln over 800°C. The difficulty of using this method is that the patterns need to be drawn and formed in advance. Some complex shapes often require a combination of several large modules and numerous small components. Although filling in the enamel is time-consuming and laborious, the finished product is highly delicate and stunning.
This extraordinary gilt brass table clock is decorated with champlevé enamel on the front dial, pillars, case and the handle at the top. The color is gorgeous and the craftsmanship is doubtlessly skilled, showing a piece of valuable collection.
