Steinway & Sons, known as the crown jewels of pianos, is known for its handmade, unique sound quality. The brand is highly prized, and has long been a sought-after instrument by the elite. The world famous pianists Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Lang Lang, Yundi Li, Wang, Horowitz, Rubinstein, etc. are all lifelong Steinway artists. Lang Lang said: “If I want to play at my best level, there is no other choice but Steinway”. Steinway pianos have been custom-built for the collections of dignitaries of the following countries: the United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Sweden, Japan, and Israel. In addition to these, some of the world’s richest people, such as Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, the Rockefeller family and the American Presidents Roosevelt and Bush, are collectors of Steinway pianos.
Made in 1915, this elegant and unique Italian rococo Steinway piano was restored to its former glory in 2012 by the Steinway’s Chief concert technician, Franz Mohr, and his son Peter Mohr. When Mohr was asked why the restoration of this piano was so important and why he put so much effort into it, he replied that the unique body of the piano was extremely valuable and that it was difficult to obtain high quality wood for such a fine piano. The piano was rebuilt to the highest Steinway specifications with over 10,000 carefully crafted parts. The result is a superbly authentic, pure and beautiful sound, with a wide range of tones and nuances. Mr. Mohr commented, “This Italian Rococo style Grand Piano is considered one of the greatest pianos ever built by Steinway & Sons”. Following its success, the piano was placed on exhibit in New York’s prestigious Steinway Hall in 2014, and was immediately acquired by an experienced Los Angeles piano collector.
Franz Mohr is the author of the influential book “My Life with the Great Pianists”, which has been highly praised by the industry. In the preface of the book, Henry Steinway, Chairman of Steinway & Sons, wrote: “Franz Mohr has succeeded in taking on the best pianists of all time, and thanks to his exceptional knowledge and unrivalled wit, he is a mentor and friend of today’s leading pianist and musician.” At Steinway & Sons, Peter Mohr has been a senior research and development engineer and manager, a quality control manager, and a member of the technical board. He has a keen interest in restoring pianos from Steinway & Sons’ golden age as well as unique restoration techniques.
This Italian rococo style piano is unique in its classical elegance and romance, with its body and legs richly decorated with exquisite relief carvings done by hand. The floral motifs and the winged angels on the top of the legs are astonishingly lifelike. The body of the piano is made of Circassian walnut, grown in woodlands in the Russian Caucasus, which is characterized by its hardness and slow growth rate. The piano is a fine work of art from Steinway & Sons’ golden era and was designed for royalty and the wealthy. Its elegant and unique beauty as well as an unmatched sound quality makes it an enviable family heirloom to own.
