VIVID BLUE DIAMOND
Blue diamonds are extremely rare and exquisitely beautiful. On average there is only 1 out of 33,000 diamonds can reach an attractive hue of blue. This special combination has made them coveted by diamond lovers and collectors for centuries. According to Gemological Institute of America ‘To find that glittering needle in the haystack, tons of ore have to be unearthed.’ This is how rare the blue diamonds are. Trace element ‘Boron’ is the reason why diamonds appear blue. The more ‘Boron’ a diamond contains, the more intense the color will be.
Very few mines produce blue diamonds, and most of the important blue diamonds known to exist have come from India and South Africa. Diamonds with a natural blue color have been known since the 1600s. In those early days, all of the blue diamonds known to be produced were found in the Golconda Sultanate of India. The large pieces of blue rough used to cut the now-named Hope and Wittelsbach-Graff diamonds were found in the diamond mines of that area. The Wittelsbach Diamond was a 35.56-carat Fancy Deep grayish blue diamond, believed to have been cut from rough mined at one of India’s Kollur Mines in the 1600s. After passing through numerous owners, including the European royal family, the Wittelsbach was purchased by Laurence Graff in 2008. He paid $23.4 million - the highest price ever paid for a diamond at auction at that time. Graff then shocked the diamond world by having the historic diamond recut to improve its cut, clarity, and color. The Zoe diamond weighing 9.57 carats set for the highest-ever price per carat at that time. Its hammered price has reached over 32 million U.S. dollars. It was owned by Rachel “Bunny” Mellon. This amazing diamond was certified by the GIA as Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond and it has a great clarity grading of VVS2 – a stunning grading for diamonds of this size. Another famous blue diamond is The Blue Moon of Josephine,a 12.03 carats blue diamond, described as flawless by experts. It was discovered from the well-known Cullinan mine in South Africa. Joseph Lau Luen-hung,a Hong Kong billionaire bought it for his seven-year-old daughter and named it for her,Josephine.
The GIA Diamond Clarity Scale has 6 categories, some of which are divided, for a total of 11 specific grades. Flawless (FL),Internally Flawless (IF),Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2),Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2),Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2),Included (I1,I2 and I3). The color grading from low to high are: Faint Blue,Very Light Blue,Light Blue,Fancy Light Blue,Fancy Blue,Fancy Intense Blue,Fancy Vivid Blue. Fancy Vivid Blue is the most desirable and rarest color of all.

Not only it is graded by Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as Fancy Vivid Blue-highest possible color grading, but also it is Internally Flawless meaning no inclusions are visible to a skilled grader under 10x magnification.
