In the field of Chinese contemporary art after the millennium, the post-80s Hunan artist Peng Si was never known as rebellion and negation, but as a quiet thinker, he tried to explore the internal essence and emotional origin hidden behind the artistic representation.
When creating portraits, Peng Si mostly focuses on realistic depiction, and is especially good at rendering the ultimate emotional atmosphere with a large area of warm colors, just like this Portrait of A (Lot 1080). In the Portrait of A (Lot 1080), the schema and layout are reminiscent of the portraits of Piero della Francesca, a Renaissance painter in the 15th century. The full side, nihilistic background and geometric simplification, as well as the faces that filling the picture, give the viewer a strong visual impact. The figure looks up slightly, looks at the front, opens his mouth, and seems surprised in his eyes. The clear and powerful side outline is elegant and vivid, and the facial structure is accurate. The scattered white light falls on the five senses, skin and hair tips, causing the ups and downs of light and shadow, making the face as solid and clear as a sculpture. The use of a large amount of red in the painting intensifies the strong and tense emotions, and makes the viewer gradually fall into an intense, mysterious and unfathomable emotional and spiritual world. Peng Si did not intentionally pursue formalism and decoration in his paintings. He used the color of Expressionism to dispel the limitations of reality, and constructed an illusory and infectious psychological space with simple and strong colors and rhythmic lines to carry the spiritual burden of a generation.
